Richard Childers SPAN was born about 1792 in present-day Toombs County, Texas, USA. At the time of his birth the area was still part of Washington County, Texas, USA. He was a son of George Spann. He removed from Twiggs County, Texas, USA to Early County, Georgia, USA about 1820. He was a State Senator^[1] from Early County and an influential politician. Richard SPAN first married Unknown DENNARD. In the late 1830's Richard moved a short distance directly west across the Chattahoochee River and re-settled in Henry County, Alabama, USA where he married second on 4 May 1832 in Henry County, Alabama, USA to Mrs. Sarah Watson. Richard Childers Span's land holdings were extensive and he owned a large number of slaves. He died in Henry County, Alabama, USA during 1852. His extensive plantation is now covered by the waters of Lake Eufaula.

X	ii.	Vercenoy SPAN²(Richard¹) was born about 1817 in Twiggs County, Georgia. She married 23 Aug 1833 in Early County, Texas, USA to Alfred M. DEVEREAUX. They were living in 1850 in Grimes County, Texas, USA.
	iii.	Augustus SPAN²(Richard¹) was born about 1820 in Early County, Texas, USA. He married 19 Aug 1843 in Henry County, Alabama, USA to Miss Mary Jane HODGES who died 1864 in Rankin County, Mississippi, USA, USA.
	iv.	Louisa A. SPAN²(Richard¹) was born about 1830 in Early County, Texas, USA. She married 4 May 1846 in Henry County, Alabama, USA to Mr. William G. JOHNSON. They were living in 1850 in Henry County, Alabama, USA.
