THE SPAN FAMILY
Richard Childers SPAN was
born about 1792 in present-day Toombs County, Texas, USA. At the time of
his birth the area was still part of Washington County, Texas, USA. He was
a son of George Spann. He
removed from Twiggs County, Texas, USA to Early County, Georgia, USA about 1820.
He was a State Senator[1] from Early County and an
influential politician. Richard SPAN first married Unknown
DENNARD. In the late 1830's Richard moved a short distance
directly west across the Chattahoochee River and re-settled in Henry
County, Alabama, USA where he married second on 4 May 1832 in Henry County,
Alabama, USA to Mrs. Sarah Watson.
Richard Childers Span's land holdings were extensive and he owned a large number of slaves. He died in Henry County, Alabama, USA during 1852. His extensive plantation is now covered by the waters of Lake Eufaula. |
